Thoughts on Social Media

What makes social media valuable? That was part of the discussion at one of our recent Monday morning gatherings.

For companies Social Media (SocMedia) has several practical uses for finding employees. One is to identify those individuals who are acquainted with new trends in technology. Not that we necessarily have to be experts in the intricate minutia of all the platforms and websites available, but that that we are aware they are out there and we're keeping abreast of what's happening.

Another practical use is to identify people who are adaptable to the changes that occur in the workaday world. Technology changes rapidly, It only took a couple of years for Facebook to replace MySpace as the place to be on the web, and then came Twitter!

For individuals it's a chance to add to our networking repertoire. If networking is about interacting with people, social media offers a chance to expand our reach wherever interests may take us. It doesn't replace getting out and meeting new people, but enhances our ability to maintain contact and grow relationships.
