If you aren’t a member of a professional association or society related to your industry or career, I recommend you join one. Memberships and affiliations are viewed positively by employers because they demonstrate your desire to stay current with industry trends and your commitment to your career. They’re also a great way to network and make connections with others in your field.
Participating in volunteer organizations is another great way to prove your willingness to get involved and demonstrate your organizational skills. Think about it: Companies want employees to help them grow and improve their overall performance, so they look for people who show initiative and the ability to get things done by improving themselves and their communities.
Remember, however, you need to be careful when choosing organizations and affiliations to list on a résumé. For example, don’t list affiliations with religious or political groups unless you know they’ll be positively perceived by the reader of your résumé, and although you may not think an organization is controversial, you can’t know what someone else will think. Including affiliations is fantastic, but you have to be careful not to alienate your reader.
