Résumé Tip of the Week 5/3

When you’re trying to position yourself above the competition, there are key words and phrases that you should include in your résumé. In order to create excitement about your abilities and qualifications, you need to use action verbs that generate interest and draw your reader in. For example, words and phrases such as “Responsible for…”, “Managed…”, and “Duties included…” are boring and uninteresting. There’s nothing in that terminology that convinces a reader that you’re someone who can produce results. Elevating the language throughout your document will elevate the interest in your résumé.

Your résumé should be written using an active tone to communicate your qualifications. Phrases that depict you as doer and someone who can make things happen will help your statements come alive. “Proven ability…”, “Expertise in…”, “Provided…”, “Collaborated…” and “Promoted initiatives…” create a sense of excitement about your abilities. Not only are you describing what you’ve done, but you’re doing so in a way that will interest your reader. In order to stand out among all the other résumés, you need to boost your language to engross your reader, showcase your accomplishments, and instill confidence in your abilities.
