Résumé Tip of the Week
When developing the summary section of your résumé, make sure you know your job target. Many people think reciting their work history is enough to get them an interview, but they’re wrong. A strong résumé begins with a summary focusing on your qualifications, areas of expertise, and the value you offer that other candidates do not. If your résumé appears unfocused, you won’t grab the attention of the reader. A recruiter is always reading a résumé with a job title or job description in mind, so don’t leave them guessing what you have to offer.
In order to land the job you want, you need a three-to-five-sentence summary paragraph describing your job title, area of work, the industries you’ve worked in, your qualifications, and your specific expertise. You want to create excitement about your abilities and prove to your reader that you’re a candidate who should be seriously considered for the job, which is why your summary is such an important part of your résumé. It’s critical that you immediately capture your reader’s attention and generate interest in your qualifications. Remember, the goal of your résumé is to persuade your reader to contact you for an interview, and unless you’re being referred to a hiring manager by a professional contact or friend, your résumé is your only ticket through an employer’s front door.
