Thoughts on Motivation

Jodi Knittel made a presentation at the Ferndale Career Center last year had a number of good ideas about things to help stay motivated when life is becomes challenging.

Being a Jobseeker has many challenges ranging from guessing what a potential employer is looking for in a resume / cover letter to the challenges of searching day after day. How to stay motivated?

Make a sound track of music that moves us. Natasha Bedeinfield's Unwritten or Gloria Estefan's Get On Your Feet were Jodi's examples of music that provided a lift when she needed it. These are songs that can have a mix of upbeat tempo and positive lyrics. My list includes Erasure's Yahoo and Sister Hazel's Change Your Mind. What does your playlist have?

Another suggestion was the Personal Affirmation. "I am ________________, ________________, and ________________. What are your three best qualities? Are you helpful? Friendly? Inquisitive? Dreamer? Intelligent? This works to remind, or convince, us of what we have to offer people and potential employers. That we're now looking for a job doesn't take these traits away from us.

Maintaining social contacts is important, so the last suggestion is a "Board of Motivation." These are the friends and associates who can help keep you on task, particularly when things like swimming or reading seem so much more attractive.

What are your challenges to staying motivated? How do you deal with the challenges as they arise?
